 The original gate still stands
out back but the never-never land of Disney's genteel Victorian backlot and
elegant Streamline Moderne structures along Dopey Drive have given way to
the mega-merger necessities of Fantasia 2000 and 800+ corporate entities.
In the most extravagant and wonderful examples of thematic architecture now
being pursued outside of Las Vegas, the old ink & paint departments
never looked so good. Witness the rainbow's end of the new Walt Disney
Studios entrance. Marvel at the "ArcoSanti-like" modules that
rise from the desert of Burbank. The true heir to the throne, Roy Disney conducts
his court in an office within the Macy's Balloon-size sorcerer's hat,
replete with stars. The animation wing looks nothing-less than Herculean
with its tremendous vaults of glass. The addition of portholes suggest a
massive ship ready to steam instead of a workaday destination. And whether
modern blasphemy or ancient hokum, the corporate temple's Grecian pinnacle
is upheld by none other than Hulk-sized graven images of the Seven Dwarfs.
