Decimation
of natural habitats and hunters in search of exotic bounties have reduced
many species of the small apes to virtual extinction. World zoos,
unsuccessful at breeding the remnant in captivity look abroad for a simian
savior. Enter Alan Mootnick, lord of the apes. A quietly intense
conservationist who has almost single- handedly stayed their death
sentences, and who, with the help of a small cadre of international
volunteers lives and works within the clean and well cared for grounds. His
nonprofit organization was founded in 1977 and is dedicated to the survival
of these swinging songbirds. Five of the 11 living species of gibbons are
present -- and pass out the banana-flavored cigars: the program is a
singular success! Several of the mating pair mothers (last in the world),
incongruous of their difficult demeanors toward our species, proudly
approached us to present their tiny, treasured offspring. -- WEBSITE-TO-GO!
