The
heart of Avalon is green -- pier green, to be precise. That is the official
color selected by city designer Dorothy Shepherd in the 1930s, and you will
find it all over town, most prominently on the 407-foot pleasure pier. The
current pier is a replacement of the original, built by the Department of
War in 1907 but destroyed by a winter storm in 1908. A century ago the pier
sought to relieve the beachfront congestion of bathers, boat stands, motor
launches, and early glass bottom boat tours. Today it is leisure central
for snorkeling and diving rentals, pedal, motor and sailing rigs, submarine
tours and dockside drinking and dining. The Harbor Master's office above
the fish and chips stand at the end of the pier is arguably the best spot
in town. And if you can't get up to the Airport-In-The-Sky's cafe, Eric's
on the pier serves up some fine buffalo burgers. The chance to enjoy fresh
air, clean water and zero stress any time of day or night should rank this
set of stilts high on any leisure list. -- WEBSITE-TO-GO!
