As an
air-conditioned motor coach climbs to the gated limits of Avalon, past the
Chimes Tower, you enter the Santa Catalina Island Conservancy, which
represents 86 percent of the island's interior. Looking out of your picture
window, you can see red-tail hawks execute aerial maneuvers in the sheer
palisades while deer, wild pigs and buffalo wander the valleys on the other
side. As the coach climbs higher still, you can spot bald eagles soaring in
2,000-foot aerie clefts. Winding the treacherous snake of road with expert
precision, your driver takes you ever higher, distracting you from the pull
of gravity with true-to-life stories that defy the laws of both gravity and
nature. You learn of the Banning brothers and their stagecoach line, early
Spanish missionaries and the earliest native inhabitants of the land. At
1,602 feet, you enter the Airport in the Sky. The 1940s-era adobe control
tower hosts a postage-stamp-sized runway (just try to land on it), a nature
center with botanical gardens, a gift shop and a restaurant with the
finest-tasting buffalo burgers this side of Montana. All downhill from
there? Not quite. As the coach heads back down, look for St. Monica's Lace,
