hail George Hale of comet lore, space telescopes and yuppie cults gone bad.
Christening a 60-inch lens upon the altar of Mt. Wilson for the Carnegie
Institute, he created the installation's first telescope in 1904. Focusing
on studies of the Sun, the Observatory today bristles with towering
antennae more commonly familiar as a backdrop to many sci-fi movies. This
cosmic quiver of sun gazers is genius on a Jules Vernian level. Most of the
telescopes are built vertically as shafts into the bedrock of the mountain.
The newly remodeled visitor's center is open weekends from 10am to 4pm. You
should obtain a visitor pass from the ranger station at the foot of the
final drive. Please take extra caution along the treacherous turns of this
stairway to heaven. -- WEBSITE-TO-GO!
