The
life and legend of William Wrigley, Jr. forever shaped and preserved Santa
Catalina Island. His monument is a soaring statue of native crushed rock,
local blue flagstone and flaming glazed tiles handmade in Avalon. Through
the vision of his widow, Ada, the 1933 gardens of his estate extended
beyond the massive family crypt to encompass almost 40 acres of extensive
plantings. Because of the island's gentle seaside climate, many specimens
of trees, shrubs and flowers are showcased from all corners of the earth.
Dedicated to species endemic to the island, the Wrigley Memorial Garden
Foundation and the Catalina Island Conservancy work to maintain these gifts
found nowhere else on the planet: Catalina Ironwood trees, Catalina
Mahogany trees, St. Catherine's Lace, Yerba Santa, Catalina Live-Forever,
Catalina Manzanita, Wild Tomato and Catalina Bedstraw. Leaving tributes of
chewed gum, however, is strongly discouraged. -- WEBSITE-TO-GO!
